Georgia teen arrested in young man's crash-related death

A Georgia teenager who was the driver in a car crash that left a high school senior dead has been charged with vehicular homicide.

The crash occurred in January when the driver, an 18-year-old woman, collided with a car driven by a Thomasville High School senior. That student, an 18-year-old male, was pronounced dead on site. He was a baseball player at the school who also took classes at Scholars Academy.

The 18-year-old woman was arrested on April 16 after an ongoing investigation by the Georgia State Patrol's specialized collision reconstruction team assigned to the case. She voluntarily surrendered at the sheriff's office in Grady County and was released after posting a $10,000 bond.

That team recommended that the woman, who attends the Brookwood School, face charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving and following too closely.

The two students are believed to have been heading to their respective schools at about 7:45 a.m. on Jan. 29 when the crash occurred on Highway 319. The woman's vehicle rear-ended the man's car, and the impact sent his car veering to the left side of the road, where it hit the center median and struck a tree.

The woman's car spun onto the shoulder of the road and landed in a ditch. She suffered only minor injuries.

There is no doubt that anyone who is accused of causing a crash that resulted in the death of another would like to go back and make different choices while behind the wheel. Unfortunately, that isn't possible. This crash has affected the lives of two families, and for one set of parents, their son never will return home. An attorney who has experience with fatal accidents can handle the legal issues for his parents so that they can focus on healing and grieving.
